Interim Executive Vice Chancellor
Dr. Robert E. Continetti is the Interim Executive Vice Chancellor at the University of California San Diego and the Distinguished Chair in Physical Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry. As the interim chief academic officer, he is responsible for policies and decisions relating to all academic programs and curriculum, instructional support programs, and faculty appointments and performance. He is the institution’s second-ranking executive officer and acts on behalf of the Chancellor in overseeing the University in the Chancellor's absence.
Prior to his appointment as Interim Executive Vice Chancellor, Continetti served as Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs for nearly eight years. In that role, Continetti supported the priorities of Academic Affairs and was also responsible for managing academic personnel processes, including oversight of Academic Personnel Services, and supporting capital programs at the University. He also served as the dean designee for the Design Lab and Qualcomm Institute, and played a key role in the establishment of the Halıcıoğlu School of Data Science and Computing.
As Interim Executive Vice Chancellor, Continetti will work with colleagues throughout Academic Affairs and partners across UC San Diego, and the broader community, to support the strategic goals of the institution and maintain the collaborative spirit required to make those aspirations attainable and sustainable.
IEVC Continetti has been a member of the Department of Chemistry at UC San Diego since 1992. As an experimental physical chemist, IEVC Continetti's research interests focus on the studies of the reaction dynamics of isolated molecules, clusters and nanoparticles.
He is an elected Fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His research and teaching efforts have been recognized with numerous awards including a Camille Dreyfus New Faculty Award, a Packard Fellowship in Science and Engineering, a Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award, an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship and an Earl Warren College Teaching Award. IEVC Continetti also received the American Chemical Society Physical Chemistry Division Award in Experimental Chemistry and a UC San Diego Diversity Champion Award.
IEVC Continetti has an extensive record of service to UC San Diego. He served two terms as Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and as Chair of the Chancellor’s Diversity Council. Prior to his appointment as Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Continetti's service to the Academic Senate included Chair of the Graduate Council, Vice Chair of the Committee on Planning and Budget, Chair of the San Diego Division of the Academic Senate and member of the Committee on Academic Personnel.
